Landmark Australian ruling rejects coal mine over global warming

I applaud the decision but wonder at the legal premise.

A substantial proportion of the members of the present sitting Federal government (noting that this was a State decision) are widely believed to be ‘owned’ by the coal and (natural) gas industries, and the present sitting NSW State government is explicitly sympathetic.

I think it unlikely, therefore, that the Federal or the relevant state governments would pass laws in support of a decision like this.

That leaves me wondering what on earth happened legally to end with this outcome. does anyone know more?
